Background of the Study

Metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions including obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia, is a growing public health concern in Nigeria (Abdullahi et al., 2023). Physical inactivity has been identified as a significant risk factor contributing to the rising prevalence of metabolic syndrome, particularly in urban and conflict-affected areas like Borno State (Usman & Ahmed, 2024).

Borno State has experienced significant socio-political instability, leading to displacement, food insecurity, and limited access to healthcare. These challenges have contributed to sedentary lifestyles, poor dietary habits, and an increase in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) (Mustapha & Yusuf, 2023). A study by Ali et al. (2024) indicated that individuals with low levels of physical activity are at a higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome, highlighting the urgent need to investigate this association in Borno State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the well-established link between physical inactivity and metabolic syndrome, there is limited research examining this relationship in Borno State. Many residents have adopted sedentary lifestyles due to security concerns, urbanization, and restricted mobility (Okonkwo & Bashir, 2023). Given the increasing burden of metabolic syndrome, there is a need to analyze the impact of physical inactivity on its prevalence and propose evidence-based interventions.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Borno State.
  2. To examine the impact of physical inactivity on metabolic syndrome development.
  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of physical activity interventions in reducing metabolic syndrome risk.

Research Questions

  1. What is the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Borno State?
  2. How does physical inactivity influence the risk of metabolic syndrome?
  3. What interventions can mitigate the effects of physical inactivity on metabolic syndrome?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Physical inactivity is significantly associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome.
  2. Metabolic syndrome prevalence is higher among individuals with sedentary lifestyles.
  3. Community-based physical activity interventions reduce metabolic syndrome risk.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will examine adults in Borno State, analyzing physical activity levels and metabolic syndrome prevalence. Limitations include security challenges affecting data collection and potential self-reporting bias in physical activity assessments.

Definition of Terms

  • Metabolic Syndrome: A cluster of conditions increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
  • Physical Inactivity: A lifestyle with insufficient movement to meet recommended exercise guidelines.
  • Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs): Chronic diseases not caused by infections, such as diabetes and hypertension.
